Mushroom Cloud: A Hibakusha Story

The documentary portrays the aftermath of atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Through the voices of Hibakusha—atomic bomb survivors—the film transforms history into memories of devastation, trauma, and survival. Hidankyo officers: Michiko Kodama, Terumi Tanaka, Jiro Hamasumi, and Toshiko Hamanaka reveal enduring physical and emotional scars, as well as discrimination. They describe the political and international obstacles that shaped efforts to support atomic bomb victims and abolish nuclear weapons. The narrative explores the pivotal 1954 Bikini Atoll Incident, which broke the silence and led to Hidankyo’s founding in 1956, with members attending UN conferences to advocate for peace. Professor Peter Kuznick discusses how Eisenhower and many military leaders considered the bombings unnecessary, as Japan had already surrendered. He provides context on nuclear diplomacy, failure of the NPT and persistence of nine nuclear powers. Hidankyo officers persevere through adversity, culminating in the organization’s 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.
